Media Release regarding the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA)

April 1st 2017 has seen the fourth round of tariff cuts take effect under the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement (JAEPA).

The JAEPA entered into force in January 2015 and will see the Elimination of the 15 percent tariff on bottled wine by 2021 through incremental reductions over time.  Under the agreement, these tariffs will continue to be reduced each year until eliminated.

WA wine features on World's 50 Best Restaurant launch event in New York

Culinary elite enjoy Australian fine wine during World’s 50 Best celebrations

Australian fine wine has been toasted in New York this week at a number of events celebrating the 2016 World’s 50 Best Restaurants and the announcement that Melbourne will host the awards in 2017.

Close to 1000 of the world’s culinary elite were guests at both the official World’s 50 Best Awards ceremony held at Cipriani on Sunday night (local time) and the 2017 launch at a brunch held by Tourism Australia at New York’s NoMad on Tuesday (local time) and a selection of Australian fine wines from regions right across the country were served throughout.

For the Tourism Australia brunch celebrating the announcement that the 2017 World’s 50 Best Awards will be held in Melbourne, Wine Australia developed a wine list that complemented the menu full of fresh, local produce and prepared by some of Australia’s finest chefs: Peter Gilmore, Dan Hunter, Ben Shewry and Neil Perry AM.

Latest Wine Production, Inventory and Domestic Sales Information Available

Wine Australia has published a ‘State of Australian Wine’ report outlining the results of the Wine Production, Inventory and Domestic Sales Survey 2015.

The survey and report follows on from last year’s Wine Sector Survey, a coordinated effort with other bodies in the grape and wine sector including Winemakers’ Federation of Australia, to streamline the annual collection of data across the wine community.

Wine Australia Manager, Market Insights Peter Bailey warmly thanked survey respondents.

‘This is the second year we’ve conducted this survey and we estimate that we were able to collect data on 84 per cent of Australian wine production and 82 per cent of domestic sales.

‘I thank everyone who took the time to participate in the survey. This information is invaluable for the sector to better understand the current state of play for Australian wine,’ he said.

Key insights from the report include:

·     Total wine production increased 0.4 per cent to 1.19 billion litres

·     White wine production increased 2.7 per cent to 550 million litres

·     Red wine production was stable at 580 million litres

·     Domestic sales value increased 3.8 per cent to $2.78 billion despite volume declining 0.6 per cent to 456 million litres

·     Winery direct to consumer sales are on the rise, up 1.5 per cent to 42.1 million litres; in contrast to retail sales, slightly down 0.8 per cent to 414 million litres

Senate Inquiry Targets Export Driven Market Development Support

The recently released Senate report on the Australian grape and wine industry “recommends that the government significantly increase its funding to wine export market development”, noting “Australia's … marketing spend is a fraction of that spent by European competitor nations”.

A demand led recovery is the best solution to most challenges currently faced by the West Australian wine industry and export success is key to developing this demand. Wines of WA submitted to the inquiry that AGWA should assist in resourcing “an export development officer (EDO) based in Perth to provide support” for WA producers.  Wines of Western Australia proposed that “in line with their Strategic Plan, the EDO would help the next 50 'hero brands' get market access – to open those doors that are difficult for small companies to open.”

The dissenting views presented in the report on the taxation of wine demonstrates the complexity of the issue. Wines of WA supports the current rebate mechanism via the ATO and any forced move to a grants scheme should not see any producer worse off through its implementation.  The Winemakers’ Federation of Australia position on the WET rebate is supported by Senator Xenophon and provides a fully costed program to amend the current WET regime. In doing so, the savings gained would provide a net benefit to federal government revenue, some of which should be allocated to AGWA for export market development.

Additionally, the recent experience in WA where the State government removed the state-based cellar door rebate without prior consultation with producers, highlights the uncertainty of a grant scheme.

In the domestic market, transparency of ownership of brands through mandatory labelling requirements is supported. Consumers have a right to know who has made the wine they are drinking.

Registrations Open for Aussie Wine Month 2016

Wine Australia is encouraging everyone in the wine community – including wine regions, wineries, restaurants, bars and retailers – to get involved in Aussie Wine Month 2016, the biggest annual celebration of Australian wine held in May each year.

Registrations of wine-focused activities and events are now open and will support the month-long promotion of Australian wine, which aims to raise awareness among consumers of the exceptional quality and diversity of the wines made in their own backyard.

Now in its fifth year, events will take place in wine regions and city locations around the country as Aussie Wine Month encourages consumers to discover something new about Australian wine throughout May.

Wine Australia’s CEO Andreas Clark said the Aussie Wine Month campaign is an opportunity for wineries and trade to partner with Wine Australia, extend their reach in the domestic consumer market and drive awareness and appreciation of our local wines.

‘With 65 wine regions in Australia, our biggest challenge is bringing this richness of styles to people’s attention. Aussie Wine Month is a great way to put the spotlight on just how varied Australian wine is in both style and variety.
‘I encourage the wine community to get creative with their events. We’ve seen everything from winery walks to comedy nights at cellar doors to cooking demonstrations matched with wine to winemaking workshops.
‘It’s all about getting drinkers to discover something new about Australian wine, whether it be a region, a grape variety or a new favourite wine.’

Western Australian Wines to Travel with China Southern Airlines

China Southern Airlines, the largest airline in Asia*, has selected two Margaret River wines as premium on-board beverages for all its return direct flights between China and Australia/New Zealand, including the Perth-Guangzhou direct path.

Fermoy Estate Classic White and Vasse Felix Sauvignon Blanc Semillon will be poured on-board China Southern Airlines flights from April 2016 and are the first two Western Australian wines to ever be featured in the carrier’s inflight offering.

“This new business development facilitated by Wines of Western Australia and the Margaret River Wine Association on behalf of China Southern Airlines and WA wine producers reiterates the significant opportunities China presents as a key export market for Western Australian wines,” said CEO of Wines of Western Australia, Larry Jorgensen.
“The premium experience aboard China Southern provides an ideal environment to introduce Chinese palates to the quality of wines in Western Australia and it is a momentous step forward in building the profile of our wine in China,” Larry continued.
“The Margaret River Wine Association has been exploring a range of business development opportunities for producers to break into and grow their distribution in China. This strategic alliance with China Southern Airlines is an outstanding progression in building the profile of brand Margaret River wine in China,” said CEO of the Margaret River Wine Industry Association, Nick Power.

Fermoy Estate General Manager Cameron Rhodes said the new opportunity for Western Australian wine producers to supply wine to China Southern Airlines was invaluable.

“The opportunity to have our wines served on all China Southern’s direct Australian and New Zealand routes is a huge honour. The Chinese market represents an enormous opportunity for all Australian wine producers and the fact that Chinese travellers will be able to enjoy our wine whilst flying on China Southern will help promote Australian wines and Australian quality produce even further,” Cameron said.

Vasse Felix Marketing and Business Development Manager Lloyd Constantine agreed the in-flight environment is ideal to increase the profile of Western Australian wines.

“Premium in-flight wine service is a great business and promotional opportunity for wine. Aboard China Southern Airlines you have an environment of captive new consumers who have already expressed an interest in Australia from a travel perspective and are eager to learn more about the exceptional natural produce of its regions, like the wine paradise that is Margaret River.”

China Southern Airlines is the first Chinese Airline to introduce direct flights from Perth to Guangzhou and their General Manager, Alex Zhao said the selection of Western Australian wine was an important element of its long-term commitment to Australasian routes.

“The decision to serve quality Western Australian wines on all our Australian and New Zealand routes is a strategic decision to allow our passengers to have a taste of Australia as they fly with us. Having these world-class wines on-board is a perfect addition to the highest level of quality and standards provided by China Southern to all of its passengers,” Mr Zhao said.                                                                                  

China Southern Airlines has been operating four flights a week between Perth and Guangzhou since July 2015 and the increase in Chinese visitors has been visible at both Fermoy Estate and Vasse Felix.

“We have already noticed an increase in Chinese customers visiting our winery and the Margaret River wine region generally. We believe that having Margaret River wines served on China Southern will only help further increase the level of interest for visiting Western Australia among Chinese travellers,” General Manager Cameron Rhodes added.

The wines will be poured on all direct China Southern Airlines flights between China and Australia/New Zealand for the next 2 years. 

The State Government has also welcomed this announcement. Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia Director General Rob Delane said this was an exciting opportunity for Western Australian fine wines, and congratulated China Southern Airlines on this initiative.
