Winestate Magazine presents: "The Swedish Wine Watch Challenge 2016"

Dear Australian and New Zealand Winemakers

Sweden is one of Europe’s strongest economies and also a very good market for new world wines. The wines of Australia and New Zealand are widely sold and consumed in this vibrant market.

In collaboration with the Swedish importer Espumante and it´s newly announced E-report (Swedish Wine Watch) Winestate has arranged for Espumante to conduct a wine judging of Australian and New Zealand wines in Sweden!

The importer has arranged some of Sweden’s top wine writers, sommeliers and buyers of the monopoly (Systembolaget) to be in the judging. All with different expertise and preference. With the clear ambition of finding out what type of wines will best fit the marketplace today.

Whilst there is no guarantee of an import order, this is a very low cost method of having your wines sent to, and reviewed by a vast vary of representatives from the Swedish market.

The judges will use the traditional wine show judging system (stars) exactly the same as Winestate.

All varietals from all regions of Australia and New Zealand are required, and they can be new release or wines that Winestate has reviewed previously – either by the Australian panels or Michael Cooper’s judging in NZ.

Key Dates

  • Entries open – from MONDAY 6 JUNE 2016 (the national day of Sweden)
  • Samples delivered to Winestate Office in Unley (Adelaide) South Australia – before FRIDAY 29 JULY 2016
  • Wines will be shipped to Stockholm by the Swedish importer for judging early October 2016.

Results will then be distributed to key buyers / monopoly and wine magazines in Sweden, as well as to Winestate for publishing on www.winestate.com.au

Submission form is at: Follow this link

Please complete the submission form and include with your samples (2 bottles of each wine that you want presented) and ensure samples are delivered to:

Sydney International Wine Competition 2016

Award Winning Wines from the 2016 Competition

To allow wine lovers to order before Christmas, the 2016 Award winning wines can be seen on the Competition's website.

Full details of the wines, judging notes, matching dishes etc will be available in the New Year.

In the interim, if you click on the wines you will be taken to the wineries website.

All the results are now with the 2016 Award winners. Don't be surprised to see the 2016 trademark bottle medallions appearing on retailers and supermarket shelves.

The award winners for each style category account for only the top 15%, the cream of the maximum 2,000 entries we can accept for each annual Competition. No matter whether they have been awarded a TOP1OO/Blue Gold, Blue Gold, or Gold they are excellent wines.  The judges are seldom unanimous in their opinions, but their combined scores determine the awards.

TOP 1OOT EXHIBITIONS

Two Sessions, each exhibiting all 2016 Competition Award winners, will be held at The Menzies Hotel, Carrington Street Sydney, Saturday, February 6. Click HERE for your on-line Booking Form.
As a Christmas special, order two or more tickets before Christmas and you will get a 10% discount.
What a perfect present for the wine lover!!!

CHAIRMAN OF Judges' Comments

The 2016 Competition's website is currently under construction.
Meantime, here below is a LINK that will take you to Chairman of Judges report for the 2016 Competition.

8 December 2015:

The Sydney International Wine Competition (SIWC) produced an illustrious list of medal winners, with 'diversity' of wine regions and wine varieties key features of the 36th annual competition.

A total of 1812 wines from nine countries were entered into this year's competition, with 100 different grape varieties and blends represented.

New Zealand once again dominated the Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir varieties, while Australia led the way with Shiraz and Cabernet, and France confirmed its world-leading position in sparkling wines, with the 2005 Lanson Gold Label Brut Vintage taking out the Best Wine of Competition.

'Emerging' grape varieties featured prominently in the Trophies list, with the Peter Lehmann H & V Tempranillo 2014 taking out two trophies, the Chairman of Judges' trophy was awarded to a Waimea Gruner Veltliner, and Portugal's Casa Santos Lima, Companhia das Vinhas SA LAB Red was also recognised with a trophy.
