-General Meeting: 14 June 2016 - WET Rebate & Constitutional Reforms
4:00 PM16:00

-General Meeting: 14 June 2016 - WET Rebate & Constitutional Reforms

Please make sure you set aside time to attend the upcoming General Meeting of the Association taking place at 4.30pm on Tuesday, 14th June; the venue is the Quality Inn on Wallcliffe Road.

We are all aware that wine tax reform and proposed changes to the WET Rebate are of great concern to all in the Margaret River Wine industry!

Opportunities such as the General Meeting provide everyone to have an open and free flowing discussion on topics such as this which are so central to the ongoing viability of a majority of Margaret River wine businesses.

With wine tax reform there appears to be four central aspects being:

  • Reducing the WET Rebate cap from $500,000 to $350,000 on the 1st July 2017 with a further cut from $350,000 to $290,000 from the 1st July 2018;
  • Amending eligibility criteria that effectively restricts growth, development and innovation with the corresponding product differentiation limitations (great article Rob Geddes MW this week on the damage the current WET Reform proposals will have on the Australian wine industry - click here to read his views);
  • "Value" is the current basis upon which wine taxation is based HOWEVER should consideration be given by the wine industry to an alternative methodology such as "Volumetric"; and
  • It is understood the actions of the Federal Government, seen to be supported by the Opposition, giving clear indication that wine tax changes will continue in some way, shape or form beyond the current proposals.

Over the coming weeks the Association will be liaising with the State and Federal MPs and will be making direct representation on the impact the proposed changes will have on Margaret River wines.

It is important that the Association consider all strategies at its disposal to ensure a continued future for the wine industry and your attendance will help in this regard.

Also on the agenda will be Constitutional amendments largely ‘technical’ arising from the wine industries transition to an Agricultural Produce Commission within Western Australia.

If you have any queries please do hesitate to contact any of your Board members or Nick in the office.

It would help greatly if you could RSVP to Pip at
