Houghton Wine Company Wins Best Wine at Qantas Wine Show

Houghton’s Gladstones Margaret River Cabernet Sauvignon 2013 has won the Best Wine of Show at the 38th annual Qantas Wine Show of Western Australia.

The trophies were announced at the Awards Dinner, at Hyatt Regency’s Grand Ballroom on October 30.

Houghton also won Best Red Wine of Show, Best Cabernet Sauvignon as well as the Most Successful Exhibitor Overall.

Amongst the other Western Australian producers winning the highly coveted trophies was Porongurup winery Zarephath Wines who scooped a total of four trophies with their 2015 Riesling, winning Best White Wine of Show, Best and Most Distinctive Character, Best 2015 Riesling and Best Wine from a Single Vineyard.

The Show’s inaugural Best Rosé of Show trophy went to Deep Woods Estate 2015 Rosé.

The Qantas Wine Show was judged earlier this month in Mount Barker by a team of wine experts headed by Melbourne judge, writer and commentator Jane Faulkner. Speaking of the results, Jane commented that a total of 114 gold medals were awarded – more than double the tally of last year’s Golds.

“This is an indicator of the quality of the wines coming out of Western Australia,” she said.

“As was to be expected, the rieslings from the Great Southern, and cabernets and chardonnays from Margaret River showed very well. What was more of a surprise was the quality of 2014 shiraz across all regions – this was a very strong category. And we were also delighted to find some unexpected little gems such as the tempranillo from Nannup Ridge.”

As a rosé advocate, Jane encouraged the Qantas Wine Show to establish a trophy for the top rosé. She congratulated Deep Woods for winning the inaugural trophy, saying it was “dry, crisp, crunchy and delicious. A classy wine and a credit to its producer.”

Joanne Bradbury, Committee Chair of the Qantas Wine Show thanked all the judges for their contribution to the show results. “We had a great group of judges who helped make the process stimulating and fun,” she said. “We are grateful to Jane for her leadership and also to Eddie McDougall, our international judge from Hong Kong.”

“We are also grateful to all our sponsors for their incredible support in making this show such an important industry benchmark.”
